Old Forge’s first Sound|Kaos speakers – VOX 3f – arrived the week of July 8th.
This 3-way, stand-mount, solid wood speaker, shown in oiled/waxed solid walnut. Measures W168 x D 240 x H 360mm. Frequency response is 35hz-35khz with 89dB/w/m sensitivity and a nominal 8 ohm impedance.
“How?!”, you ask? It utilizes a front-firing 4″ Tangband “b”How?!”, you ask? It utilizes a front-firing 4″ Tangband widebander, a pair of 5″ side-firing carbon fiber woofers and a top-mounted Raal ribbon tweeter with a customized transformer to avoid resistors in the crossover. The woofers are low-passed at 200hz, the wideband midrange rolls off naturally at the bottom and hands off to the ribbon via a single capacitor at 7khz.
These have proven to be shockingly good at the Forge and are now en route to Room 5220 at the California Audio Show in Oakland July 26-28.
Old Forge has taken on Luna Cables to broaden its selection of top quality cables, offering a broad and deep selection of cable categories and performance levels.
For our first shipment, we’ve decided to take on a broad selection of the Orange level cables, in a range that runs, (bottom to top): Gris (gray), Orange, Mauve (royal blue), Rouge (red), Noir (black).
By June 14, we hope to be able to completely re-wire a system using Luna Cable orange power cords, USB cable, interconnects and speaker cables. Stay tuned for impressions in 2-3 weeks. Who knows where we might go from there!
Over the next month, three exciting products will arrive at Old Forge Audio:
Innuos ZEN Mk III music server – 11/29
Just as the discontinued ZENith MkII demo flies to its new home, the latest ZEN arrives to partner with the Aqua Acoustic Quality Voce Mk III DAC. To quote Innuos’ web site:
For music enthusiasts who want to enjoy their large music libraries with a dedicated server delivering Hi-Fi quality, the ZEN Mk3 represents new value for money in digital audio performance. The new ZEN Mk3 now has:
· Dual Linear Power Supply – With ultra-low noise regulators and Nichicon Capacitors.
· Custom-made motherboard – With improved EMI treatment.
· Asymmetrical isolation feet – Derived from the successful design implementation on the ZENith SE.
(Why not another ZENith, you ask? Because we’ve set our sights on the Statement to partner our La Scala and Formula DACs!)
DeVore Fidelity Gibbon 3XL – w/o 12/3
This sleek ape joins the ’17 Stereophile Speaker of the Year Orangutan 96 and its slimmer sibling the 0/93 on the demo floor. If you seek maximum musical impact combined with a minimal footprint, come listen!
In the beginning, there was Old Forge Studio – a small, old school recording studio using ribbon mics, tube mic preamps and tape to make minimalist, near-live recordings of small, acoustic ensembles. (Its original location was, in fact, an old Forge building, but that’s another story.)
Then Old Forge Studio added two channel audio to the mix and relocated to larger digs and all was well.
Then I added an import/Distribution wing and things started to get a bit complicated, so I created Old Forge Marketing to separate that part of the business and clarify things, in the process creating the Old Forge Marketing web site. That’s where you can find out about U.S. distribution of the Wand tone arms and new turntable, plus Pureaudio electronics.
Since then it has become clear that people expect to see Audio, Hi-Fi or Sound in an audio store’s name, and without it they become confused or fail to recognize it as such in the first place . . .
Which brings us here: A third web site called Old Forge Audio to cover the doings at the retail shop. The Old Forge Studio site will remain, but shift its focus to reflect what’s happening in the recording studio, where it all started.
Hopefully this will all be clear and understandable. We’ll see!
